When I was in London a short while back and we had cause to go into the loft where the filing cabinet lives, my father showed me the notebook of my great-great-great uncle Isidore, kept during his wide-ranging travels in his later years in the second half of the 19th century. I reproduce below a couple of the sketches that he made describing the rehabilitation of a certain Ahmed, whom he had encountered on his travels. As uncle Isidore had previously worked as a plumber's mate in Leeds, I remain fondly attached to the idea that he may have played an active role in the events depicted.

I love the blissful expression on his face in the drawing of him lounging by/in the pool with a glass and straw.
