So, the eagle scroll-carrier what I drew is nicked from http://bestiary.ca - which I would recommend to anyone who wants to read about some of the myths about beasts, birds, serpents, bugs, and the odd tree or rock, or to find mediaeval illustrations to copy.

It's not just familiar animals, either; a favourite of mine is the bonnacon. Look through the gallery for pictures of disgusted bonnacon-hunters.

Perhaps the bonnacon contains some distant reference to hippos, which (as I was reminded by QI, after reading it in The Naked Ape) use their tails as rotary dung spreaders to distribute their scent marking over a wide area of territory!

I guess hippos would be plenty fearsome enough even without the dung flinging though.
