Which leads on to good advice in situations like this:
When you're in a hole, keep digging. Eventually you'll hit the point where there are no longer clear answers and you can turn it into a shouting match based on group loyalties and things like that. After all, "reasonable people" who make up their mind based on what you said when things were clear are just unreliable turncoats, you didn't want their support anyway, did you?
